No "Frome" at the Inn
The SWWRF ‘No “Frome” at the Inn’ Christmas meeting commenced at the Cheese and Grain, Frome on Wednesday 6th December with guest speakers providing insight into waste and litter prevention.
Engaging guest speakers from a range of charities, private sector companies, consultancies and community action groups provided a comprehensive overview of campaigns, innovative solutions and commercial opportunities in regional and nationwide waste and litter prevention projects.
Re-use projects that help keep unwanted items out of landfill saving local authorities extra waste disposal costs and creating social value were presented by representatives from Frome Share Shop and Bristol Toy library, whilst the Furniture Re-use network explained how they are implementing re-use schemes on a national scale and what potential there is for more to be done.
This was complimented by talks about how the community action group, ‘Cleaner Coastlines’ is gathering momentum in driving Weston-super-Mare into being a plastic free coastline and Waste Consultancy, Eunomia demonstrating measures local authorities can make to increase waste and litter prevention.
In addition, Keep Britain Tidy provided insight into the campaigns they have managed working in conjunction with local authorities to reduce household waste arisings and litter from households and other environmental schemes they run. Whilst, Wessex Water provided insight into the issues they face with the creation and removal of ‘fatbergs’ in their sewer systems and the educational campaigns they are running to educate the public about what items not to flush down the toilet or sink.
Finally local business, Protomax Plastics discussed how they are world leaders upcycling unwanted plastics into recycled boards, a sustainable alternative to plywood to make furniture and a vast range of other innovative products.
SWWRF Chair Fiona Tame stated ‘This was a thoroughly enjoyable and very informative day and is exciting to see what is being done to prevent waste and reduce litter across the South West and throughout the UK.
‘Whilst delegates were impressed with the variety of guest speakers some humour was injected into the day with a Secret Santa session and prizes being given out for a foil model making competition’.
She concluded by saying ‘she looks forward to seeing everyone at the spring meeting'.
